Industry Report: Sustaining and Retaining Senior Leaders in the Social Sector

Senior leaders in the social sector are experiencing burnout and exiting the sector at alarming rates.  Shining more light on this issue and engaging these leaders in developing and implementing effective solutions is a critical priority, particularly for women and leaders of color who are often underresourced in the sector. 


Our team here at MING, in partnership with on-ramps*, asked senior leaders to share their experiences and recommendations on solutions to improving how senior leaders can be sustained and retained in the sector.     The MING Team collaborated with The Pinkerton Foundation to design and launch an inaugural leadership cohort program for a small group of BIPOC executives leading grantee organizations.  During the program, these leaders participated in a series of in-depth interviews to describe their pathways to leadership—and to share insights that might illuminate the way for other leaders of color in the social impact sector.   • Making or Taking Space

    As nonprofit leaders, Boards, and funders increasingly examine issues of race and racial equity, more organizations have engaged in an active process to replace exiting white leaders with leaders of color. This approach can have beneficial and adverse impacts on both incoming and outgoing leaders and the organizations they oversee. To better support these transitions, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation (RSCF) funded a study to explore the organizational dynamics when Black, Indigenous, or other people of color (BIPOC) are hired into executive leadership roles following the departure of white leaders. The result is the report, which the MING team served as a contributor to.
